Features, Cost or Time – Pick any Two

“Achieving the right mix of key factors in product design and development can be defined within three areas – features, cost and time”.

A common goal in successfully launching a product is to achieve success measured by key factors including positive user experiences and accomplishing sales conversions within a defined timeframe. Consumers will often evaluate whether the quality of a product is worthy of their hard-earned dollars based on the look, function, price point and availability.

In a similar manner, achieving the right mix of key factors in product development can be defined within three areas – features, cost and time. Two of the key factors can be optimised, but it is usually at the expense of the third factor. Having all three key factors maximised is indeed a rare proposition. The three key factors are linked to project constraints which influence the overall quality of the product. When changes are made to one constraint, it has a flow-on effect to at least one other to ensure that the right level of quality is achieved.

Here are some examples of strategies to achieve desirable project outcomes based on the three key factors:

Feature-Rich

  • Increase the prototyping investment to verify the extensive list of design requirements
  • Applying more resources such as skilled designers or engineers working simultaneously to resolve the multiple facets of product development

Lean Development Cost

  • Trimming features from the project scope can assist in minimising development complexity, time and therefore cost
  • Combining clients’ in-house capabilities and resources in partnership with Infinity Design to share the project tasks

Faster Turnaround

  • Selecting off-the-shelf components that are already developed and field tested
  • Applying more resources such as skilled designers or engineers working simultaneously to resolve the multiple facets of product development

At Infinity Design, we ensure that collaboration with our clients begins right at the start of the product development process. We engage with our clients on each project to work out which two key factors are most important to them. We have the flexibility and insight to tailor our design services with the right mix of key factors to meet each client’s project needs.
